40th Annual Race Kicked off Frederick’s In the Streets, Hosted 505 Participants
FREDERICK, Md. — On September 10, the Frederick Steeplechasers Running Club hosted the 40th running of its Market Street Mile race, kicking off Celebrate Frederick’s In The Streets festival. This year’s race welcomed 505 participants across four competitive heats. With support from local and regional runners, volunteers, donors, and kind sponsors, the event netted $7,300.39 for local nonprofit organizations.
With its mostly downhill race course, the Market Street Mile empowered participants to turn in some extremely competitive times. Andrea Dodson of Boonsboro, Md., took first place in the women’s/non-binary heat with a time of 5:20. Robert Creese of Mount Airy, Md., took first place in the men’s/non-binary heat with an outstanding time of 4:15. Miles Ghim of Frederick, Md., led the spirited youth heat with a time of 6:16. The event also welcomed an excellent turnout of participants in the untimed family/fun mile to wrap up the morning of racing.
$3,000 of the proceeds will benefit the Lincoln Elementary School Panther Running Club, which is managed by the Frederick Steeplechasers Running Club. The free, after-school Panther Running Club introduces running to students in grades two through five. The remainder of the proceeds, $4,300.39, went to City Youth Matrix (CYM). CYM provides Frederick-area children access to various after-school enrichment programs by eliminating financial, transportation and cultural barriers.
“Market Street Mile’s mission is to put on a quality race while supporting Frederick-area children in need. City Youth Matrix and Lincoln Panther Running Club are outstanding examples of the community stepping up and helping those kids get an opportunity to make great lifelong decisions,” Jake Sisler, Race Director for the Market Street Mile, said. “We could not put on such a unique community-benefitting race without our Sponsors. We want to thank our returning premier sponsor, Rehab2Perform for continuing to support the Market Street Mile!”
The Frederick Steeplechasers Running Club has been supporting the local running community since 1975. The four signature races hosted by the Steeplechasers in 2022 raised more than $58,000 for the Frederick community, reflecting the club’s commitment to making Frederick a better place for all its residents. See steeplechasers.org for more information about the Steeplechasers and frederickmarketstreetmile.com for details of the race, which will occur next on September 9, 2023.
